Biography
Manta Antonio was born in Empoli, after several working experiences he established in a country town of Valdarno, Pia di SCO'. He always had a close relationship with photography; as often happens, initially for pure diversion, after at a professional level. The many years spent working on images, made him consider "reportage" a strong reference for his photographic production. Operating in more fields of photography, experience after experience,he caught the essence with regard to photographic composition and content. The desire for knowledge and constant experimentation, brought him to the profession in digital imaging, as well as fine print in fine art. That's why he has chosen, for his photographic studio, the new address located away from the chaos of big cities. Now he's considered, in the areas first mentioned, one of the leading experts of the moment and is required for this in every part of Italy to hold workshops, to give lecturers and conversations on reportages . To his credit numerous publications including photographic-reportages; the finalization of his books production beeing very often significant charity work.

Workshop with ERNESTO BAZAN
“The
editing of your work”
27 – 28 –
29 of November 2009
Description:
The
more I teach, the more I realize how difficult it is to select one’s own work.
I am sure that editing is the Achilles’ heel of any photographer.
How
many books have we seen, included ours, which could have been much better if we
had paid more attention and seriousness in the selection of our photographs?
This
will be an intensive workshop where we will deal with several topics about how
to gather a coherent and consistent group of photographs.
We
will closely examine 20 contact prints of each student in order to learn more
about the approach of the photographer, his intentions, his composition style,
his ability to discern and to extract from life’s flow the essence of life
itself (a rarely useful goal).
We
will critically examine some photographic books, trying to understand what make
them special or which factors cause them a loss of interest, as the insertion of less interesting
photographs, or some erroneous combination between the images, or bad graphic
choices.
We
will peer at your best images and long-term photographic projects.
I
will help you to remove the weakest and more repetitive photographs
that
often dilute the best photos’ impact. I will assist you in creating the best
photographic sequence, the more appropriated combinations of images.
I
can imagine this workshop as a three-day intensive photographic sessions in
which we will listen to the different opinions of the group.
We
will establish a high standard in the selection of the best images, in order to
reach a strong selection that will flow in a harmonious way.
Ernesto Bazan
What
to bring:
A long-term
photographic project or a portfolio with the best pictures; 20 contact prints
with nothing written on; your favorite photographic book.
Author’s
Biography:
Ernesto Bazan was born in 1959 in Palermo, in the
Sicilian Isle of Italy.
When he was 14, he received his first camera and he
began to photograph the daily life of his native city and the rural areas of
Sicily.
Photography was much more than a simple work: it was a
real passion, a mission of his life.
Bazan
published many books: “Il Passato Perpetuo”, “Passing Through”, “I Primi
Vent’Anni”, “Isola e Molo Nord”.
In 2008, his new publishing house - BazanPhotos
Publishing - published his new book “Cuba” that tells the story of his
14-year-long life and photographer’s experience in the Isle.
Bazan made some expositions in Europe, in Latin
America and in the United States.
His pictures belong to private collections and museums
like MOMA, the International Center of Photography of New York, SFMOMA in San
Francisco, the Fine Arts Museum in Houston, the Center for Documentary Studies
of the University of Duke in Durham, the South East Museum of Photography in
Daytona, the Fondazione Italiana della Fotografia in Turin, the Biblioteque
Nationale in Paris and the Rattau Museum in Arles.
From 1992 to 2006, he documented the “Special Period”
in Cuba. This work gave him the opportunity to win some of the most prestigious
international awards, like: the W. Eugene Smith, the Mother Jones Foundation
for Photojournalism, the Dorothe Lange- Paul Taylor prize, the World Press
Photos, two grants from the Alicia Patterson Foundations and one from
Guggenheim Foundations.
In 2002 Ernesto Bazan created the BazanPhotos workshop www.bazanphotos.com,
giving a special emphasis to Latin America.

him. Thousands of students have studied with him in the last seven years.
He lives with his wife Sissy and with his twins Pietro
and Stefano and their three dogs Diva, Ono e Charlotte in Veracruz, Mexico.

Workshop with CLAUDE NORI
“The
photographer’s book, an autobiographic adventure between real and fantasy"
28 – 29 November 2009
Description:
For a photographer the book represents a
territory of creation, where, page after page, he can invent a purely visual
grammar. Starting from the reality of the photographic act, he lets his
intimacy and fantasy come up . Like a film director, the photographer becomes
the real author of his book, leaving his mark on it, in particular with textes
and fictional escapes.
The workshop intends to start from
concrete examples concerning the history of the photographer’s great books
(Gibson, Ghirri, Frank, Plossu) as well as shots made by the students,
comparing theorical, artistical and practical aspects regarding the book, from
the graphic research and the pagination until the different ways of printing.
